Foundation of the German state was laid in the late 9th century. the history of German state was closely connected with the history of the Holy Roman Empire. Within this empire, multiple German states and free imperial cities existed. The most powerful of them was Prussia. The individual character of Holy Roman Empire led to serious lack of stability. Unification of most of the German states took place in 1871 when the German Empire was founded. After WW1, a democratic Weimar Republic was declared.
Following WW2, Germany was divided into two parts – democratic West Germany (Federal Republic of Germany) and East Germany (German Democratic Republic) which came under Soviet spheres of influence until its Reunification in 1990.
